Cell Phone Cover Pattern & Tutorial

This is Day 11 of Twleve Days of Gifts Kids Can Make!

Isn’t this cell phone cover craft cute? I just love the way it turned out. This thing is so simple to make – you don’t even need a sewing machine (though it would make it faster)!

I think the key to making this sleeve look so cute is to find the cutest button you can possibly find. I got mine at Joann’s.

What You Need to Make a Cell Phone Cover

Felt – you can just buy one of those small 8″ x 10″ craft felt pieces. I bought mine by the yard because I liked the color better. Even then it’s super-cheap.

1 foot of thin elastic cording – choose a funky contrasting color!

How to Make a Cell Phone Cover

First you need to cut the felt to the size of your cell phone – since they are all different, here’s a general guide on how to cut your own pattern.

Fold the felt in half and cut it to the same height as your phone. Cut it wide enough to have a 3/8″ inch or 1 cm seam allowance on each side as shown:

Stitch up the sides, leaving the top open of course. Use small stitches! Or a sewing machine!!

Turn it inside out like this.

Sew the button onto the front of the case in the middle with about 1 inch / 2 cm space at the top.

Turn the phone cover over and thread your elastic cord through your yarn needle. Sew it into the center back of the cover as shown, 3 stitches total.

Before you do this last part, be sure to slip your phone into the case to make sure that the elastic fits the cover and your phone perfectly. Wrap the elastic around the button and tie it off in the back – you want it snug but not tight. Tie it in a square knot 3-4 times to make it strong.

Trim off the ends of the cord and gently pull the knot through your stitches so that the knot is on the inside of the case.

That’s it!

  1. To save money, recycle items you already have around the house. T-shirt fabric (from a tee that’s too small but you can’t bear to throw it away), fabric from jeans or pajamas, etc can be used for free! Ask your parents or grandparents for an old button. My mom and my grandma both have jars filled with them. A ponytail holder is a good alternative to elastic cording.

    Awesome tute!
