Learning to write craft project

So, my amazing three year old recently learned how to write her name.  I wanted to continue to encourage her to learn her letters, so we came up with this fun craft to practice them.  We use erasable markers so that she can practice her letters over and over again.

Make a craft that encourages kids to learn to write:

• Poster board (you could do a smaller version with cardstock)
• Markers
• Pencil
• Ruler or yard stick
• Scissors
• Contact paper

What you need to make this reusable writing poster.

Measure out your lines. We did larger ones at the top for learning the letters and smaller ones at the bottom to practice them.

Trace your lines to look like the paper you used in elementary school.

We used green on the top (for “go” or “start”), a yellow dashed line in the middle (for “caution”), and a red line at the bottom for “stop.”  I also wrote the alphabet, numbers, and basic shapes in the middle so Dot could use them as examples when learning to write.

Lay the poster out on your contact paper, cutting two pieces and then affixing one to the back and one to the front.

I left about 1 1/2" around the edges to make sure I had enough and then trimmed it down.

Look what a great job my super-brilliant girl did! (She wrote the one on the right, which is probably obvious.)

I didn't want to waste the back, so I colored it like a picture frame, and she can doodle on that erasable surface, too.

What I Learned the Hard Way: I got dry erase markers for this, and they don’t come off quite as well as I was hoping.  Using washable ones and wiping it off with water might be a better way to go.

When I originally started making this alphabet wall art, I was really just planning to work with my preschooler on four letters.  The idea was to do a “little project” that was educational.  I figured, why not make some glitter letters to put on our Christmas stocking so that Santa would know whose was whose?  It turns out, however, that four letters just doesn’t cause enough of a glitter explosion to satisfy an almost-three-year old.  At that point, it was “Why not?” and we went ahead and did the whole alphabet.

Of course, since I’m in the midst of decorating her room (yes, I’m making pretty much everything), it occurred to me that a glitter alphabet on the wall is pretty darn cool.

What you’ll need to make this alphabet wall art:

This kids' alphabet project doesn't take a whole lot of preparation.

• felt that matches your decor
• glitter
• white glue
• scissors
• mini craft clothespins (I got 50 for about $3.00 through Amazon)
• spool of ribbon that matches your decor

Cut felt into rectangles.  Mine are approximately 2 1/2 x 3 1/2″.  I didn’t make them uniform in size, but the are similar.  The lettering is varied a bit, too, so the end result is very nicely mis-matched.

Use white glue to draw each letter onto your felt.

Try not to twitch as your child sprinkles glitter all over your dining room...I mean, the letters.

Sprinkle the letters liberally with glitter.

Shake off the excess glitter and put the letters aside to dry.

Hang the alphabet on a ribbon using miniature craft clothespins and then nail the ribbon to the wall.

This alphabet art is a learning project that adds nice color to your child's room.

What I Learned the Hard Way: I was literally on the letters X and Y when it occurred to me that I could have drawn a bunch with glue and then let Dot sprinkle five or ten all at once.  Instead, I spent a lot of extra time doing them one at a time.

But these Christmas letters could be used for just about anything – Christmas cards, stencils, signs, embroidery initials… you name it. And I even went the extra mile on this set and included lowercase letters in addition to a captial letters set. Kind of a pain, but worth it for Christmas projects!
