Balloon and Tissue Paper Halloween Pumpkin Craft

I wouldn’t classify myself as a “hoarder” per se, but I do have a weak spot for a few things. Tissue paper is one of them. After a birthday party or other celebration, you will find me lovingly rescuing tissue paper from gift bags (which also get reused), smoothing out the wrinkles, and folding it to go into a special drawer. Yes, I have an entire drawer devoted to recycled tissue paper. When I come across craft ideas like this Halloween jack-o-lantern, it makes me so happy to know that I can simply use what I have on hand.

To make a balloon jack-o-lantern, you need:

Orange tissue paper
White glue (watered down)
Paintbrush
Black or yellow construction paper
Green ribbon (not pictured)

This is a pretty easy Halloween craft for kids, too.

Start by ripping your tissue paper into small, irregular pieces, no bigger than about 2" x 2". As you can see, even the baby is "helping" with this one!

Affix the tissue paper pieces to the balloon by brushing on a layer of watered-down glue, pressing the paper on, and then covering with another layer of glue. Overlap the paper to cover all of the balloon.

Since our balloon was a pretty dark color, we did about three layers of tissue paper to make our jack-o-lantern nice and orange.

Cut the jack-o-lantern face out of construction paper and glue to your pumpkin.

Hang the craft up using green ribbon, and curl some to fall around the top like pumpkin vines.

Make Masquerade Masks

I’ve always loved those gorgeous & intricate feather masquerade masks – and I always figured they were very difficult to make. I have discovered that they can actually be really easy to make! And as a side note, if you plan on making these for yourself, don’t let any little girls get a hold of them. They will walk off with them and you’ll never see it again.

Masquerade Mask Craft Materials List

Black crafting foam sheet

Colored crafting feathers

Fake flower petals

Hot glue gun plus Elmer’s glue

Glitter

Elastic thread or ribbon

How to Make Masquerade Masks

Print out the mask template and trace it onto your foam craft sheet. I suppose you could make a more temporary mask if you printed out onto card stock (which is why I gave you two color choices). But I honestly don’t know how well it would hold up on paper. Just sayin’.

You can’t see it very well in the photo, but I also poked holes on the sides to add elastic when done.

Pick out feathers that you can glue symmetrically to both sides of the mask. I chose three colors and made sure that each color had a ‘twin’ that was about the same length and width. Once you have enough to go around the edges, start gluing them in place with the hot glue gun. I used 10 feathers in my masquerade mask, because I didn’t want them pointing down and tickling the heck out of my face.

This part doesn’t need to be particularly neat or pretty – it will soon get covered up.

After the feathers are in place, cut some petals from a fake flower into the shape you want. I used two almost half circles for each side and a small group of four petals for the center top of the mask.

Glue the petals over the feather stems with the hot glue gun.

Here’s the mask with all the feathers and petals hot-glued in place:

Now it’s time to break out the Elmer’s glue – the hot glue gun won’t work for this part. Use a generous amount to cover up the base of the petals, being very careful to make a precise outline around the eye holes:

Then put it onto a piece of paper and dump a ton of glitter on your glue.

And just leave it there until it dries.

I know it’s hard. Don’t touch it.

But when it’s dry – you’re pretty much done!

Simply slip some elastic thread or ribbon in your holes and wear it with glee!

Halloween T-Shirt Iron Ons

I was digging around in some old artwork of mine today, and came up with a new idea for Craft Jr. – printable iron ons! These things are awesome – simply print these Halloween designs out on ink jet iron-on transfer paper and iron them onto t shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags (ooooo! Make trick or treat bags!), whatever your heart desires. You could make adorable Halloween party favors with these too!

I don’t get to draw too often these days anymore, so when I get to put up a post with my own hand-drawn artwork, I get way excited. :) So if you use these, I’d be even happier if you uploaded a picture of your project in the comments on this page!

Special printing note: PLEASE do a test run on your printer’s draft setting before you print these out onto your expensive iron-on-transfer paper! You may need to adjust your printer settings to get these at the size you want. At the VERY least, use the Print Preview!!

Printable Vintage Halloween Cards

I am kind of obsessed with vintage Halloween stuff this year. I’ve been collecting old Halloween decorations on Ebay and Etsy since last winter! I’m trying to decide if the beginning of September is too early to start putting them out – what do you think?

Paper Bag Crafts for Halloween
